Leaders by blood, by command, by virtue
Three ways to end up in charge, and why the third one struggles with succession.
There are three ways to end up in charge. Some leaders inherit it. Some are handed it by a structure that can take it back. Some are followed because people decided they were worth following.
I try to be the third kind, and the third kind has a known weakness: succession. Authority that comes from who you are does not transfer when you leave. That is why the hardest part of the NUST Entrepreneurs Club was not reviving it. It was handing it over so it would survive me.
If your organization only works while you are in the room, you have built a fan club, not an institution.
